What’s new at HTPS this year?

You may have noticed some changes to the face of the school since last September….

Thanks to an awesome collaboration between the HTPS teachers, students, volunteers from the community and one very special (and highly accomplished!) art teacher, a magical underwater world now graces the exterior walls of the school!  The mural- which depicts vibrant Bahamian sea life, is more than just an aesthetic enhancement; it symbolizes the connection we share with our environment and reminds us of our collective responsibility to our precious marine ecosystems.

Each class played a role in the creation of this masterpiece, as students from each grade contributed their drawings and brushstrokes before Ms. Cindy Parrot Todd- a Hope Town resident and recently retired art teacher, added the finishing touches that bring the mural to life. Fifth grade student Gabriella A. shared her thoughts about the day her class got to work on the mural: “I remember that day in the back of my head, it was a special day for me because it was my birthday, March 15th. Everybody was so friendly and nice that was helping. My friends and I had so much fun!” Fellow 5th grader Cindy D. added “I remember that day like it was two minutes ago, it was a really beautiful day.”

I love that shark so much!,” said 6th grader Marquez M.

This hands-on learning experience has allowed students of all ages to learn more about the local marine life, deepening their appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the underwater world.  Here is what 6th grade student Arielle A. had to say about her experience working on the mural:

”A wonderful painter, Ms. Cindy came to the school last year and suggested we make a mural about the incredible sea life here in Hope Town. The teachers loved the idea and we soon started on the fun, memorable, and exciting work. We were required to bring a plain white shirt so we don't get our uniforms dirty with paint. Ms. Cindy outlined the animals from our drawings and we all had to do was paint. The work was easier because of her ways. There were a variety of various animals and plants. Volunteers joined this great idea, making it come true. Everyone had a great time doing their part. After we were finished, Ms. Cindy took the time out of her day to add beautiful details. The laborious work was done because of her and with our help.”

Seeing the mural every day fills the students with a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing they played a part in showcasing the extraordinary wonders of their waters.  Ms. Cindy and the students of Hope Town Primary School have crafted a work of art that honors their environment and speaks to the soul of every Bahamian.

An extra special thanks to Ms. Cindy Parrot Todd and the wonderful community members who donated their time and resources to bring Ms. Cindy’s idea to life!
